GMC Prep scores big Homecoming win Taylor Payne leads the way with 155 yards, 3 scores Brent Martin CNHI The Union-Recorder Sat Oct 16, 2010, 08:00 AM EDT MILLEDGEVILLE 鈥� The weather was just starting to get chilly Friday night when GMC Prep held on for a nail-biting 25-22 victory over the Glascock County Panthers. The Bulldogs (4-3) put together a complete performance Friday and road the powerful legs of star tailback Taylor Payne all the way to victory. The win puts the Bulldogs back on track for their goal of a 7-3 season. Clinging to a 19-8 lead heading into the second half, GMC Prep鈥檚 Skylar Walker could be heard yelling, 鈥淚t鈥檚 zero-zero right now, baby!,鈥� as the team took the field. Payne had two touchdowns in the first half and Mosley added one on a keeper, and GMC Prep鈥檚 defense did all the rest. GMC Prep鈥檚 Andreus Warthen had a phenomenal game Friday night on defense and led all tacklers with 12. Warthen and Markel Jones, who was also sharp defensively, both caused fumbles in the first half and recovered both. 鈥淲e came out for the first time this year and executed well on offense at the start of the game. We tried to take advantage of some things they were doing,鈥� said GMC Prep head coach Brad Owens as he celebrated with the team. Owens, however, wasn鈥檛 pleased with this team鈥檚 production on extra points. 鈥淚 was disappointed in our extra point efforts. We missed the first PAT, but then we were stopped on a running two-point conversion,鈥� he said. The Bulldogs were led by the running of Taylor Payne, who finished with 155 yards and three scores. Payne had several long runs in the game and ran with a fire and intensity that would make any coach proud. Mosley, who was returning from an injury, later sealed the win with a leaping interception late in the fourth quarter, with his team clinging to a three point lead. 鈥淗e鈥檚 our best cover guy and he鈥檚 proved it again and again,鈥� said Owens. GMC Prep鈥檚 Joseph McAllister was also strong through the air, hauling in two passes from Mosley for 72 yards. 鈥淭hey [Glascock] were a good team. They didn鈥檛 have any quit in them,鈥� said Owens. Owens was also pleased with how his defense bended at times, but didn鈥檛 break. 鈥淚 thought the defense did a good job of adjusting. Coach Simpson does a great job with them. Skylar Walker had some pretty big tackles in the game,鈥� said Owens. The Bulldogs will next face Lakeview Academy at home Oct. 22 鈥淲e have two more home games and I hope we have big crowds at all of them,鈥� said Owens.
