GMC Remembered – August 14
GMC Remembered On this day in 1945, August 14th, Japan surrendered, unconditionally, to end the Second World War. Germany had surrendered on May 7th and upon the Japanese surrender on August 14th all United States Force combat actions ceased and all units were frozen in place. According to school records, during World War II, 2035 GMC Cadets were active in the Armed Forces and 46 gave their lives. Of the 2035 service members, 1175 served in the Army, 435 were in the Navy, 105 were Marines, and 100 were Merchant Marines. The branch of service of the others is not documented. Three families had four sons and seven families had three sons, all GMC alumni, who served in the war 鈥 all holding rank as officers.
