GMC Prep teachers awarded Bright Ideas Grants
On February 10, Tri-County EMC surprised two GMC Prep School teachers with the 2016-2017 Bright Ideas Grants to improve education in their classrooms. They awarded 10th grade English teacher, Amy Lee, and 6th grade PE teacher, Jennifer Deason with grants totaling more than $2000.
Amy Lee was awarded $929 for her 1920s Living Museum used to introduce her students to the novel The Great Gatsby. Her 10th grade students will complete a research project over the 1920s and dress in period attire as they deliver an engaging presentation.
鈥淓ach year the students take on the monumental task of creating a 1920s Living Museum as an introduction to the novel The Great Gatsby, and each year the students and their parents contribute their own resources to make the museum a success,鈥� said Amy Lee, GMC Prep 10th grade English teacher. 鈥淚nstead of asking the parents and students to take on this financial burden, I decided to apply for the Tri-County EMC Bright Ideas Grant. This grant will provide my students with the opportunity to think big and not let a lack of resources stand in the way of their 鈥渂right ideas.鈥� With this grant students will be able to see their visions come to life without the stress of how to acquire the supplies. The 1920s Living Museum is my favorite time of the year, and each year I think of ways to make it bigger, better, and more beneficial than the year before. I can鈥檛 wait to see what success the students have with the addition of this grant!鈥�
Jennifer Deason was awarded $1,114.14 for her 鈥淪tepping and Pepping Up PE鈥� project. Students will incorporate their love for music and physical activity in their PE class. They will use stability balls and rhythm sticks to create music and movement while a pedometer tracks their fitness activity. The goal of this project is to encourage students to increase their physical activity through making music.
鈥淲e鈥檒l use the stability balls for different activities, we鈥檒l use the rhythm sticks to create movement, and we鈥檒l have pedometers to track their steps and movement to make them more aware of how they are getting active in PE,鈥� said Jennifer Deason, 6th grade PE teacher.
Lee and Deason were chosen out of 90 applicants and were two of the 27 grants distributed to schools in Baldwin, Putnam, Jones and, Wilkinson Counties. Tri-County EMC distributed a total of $30,000 to schools in those counties.
