September 5, 2013 GMC Prep optimistic in week two Steven Cary The Union-Recorder The Union-Recorder Thu Sep 05, 2013, 01:00 PM EDT MILLEDGEVILLE 鈥� Coming off a hard-fought loss in their season-opener last week, Georgia Military Prep School looks to rebound Friday night in their second-straight home game against Glascock County. The Bulldogs approach the match-up with a renewed confidence after dropping their first contest of the season to Harlem. 鈥淚 feel like we鈥檙e confident and the kids are confident,鈥� Steven Simpson, head coach, said. 鈥淭he kids were able to see it was a matter of three or four plays that lost us the game.鈥� Simpson and his staff understand that GMC Prep will struggle if Friday鈥檚 conditions are similar to last Friday night, as the team鈥檚 depth is limited. 鈥淥ur kids play both ways and special teams, so they don鈥檛 have many chances to come off the field,鈥� Simpson said. 鈥淭he good news is that Glascock will be in a similar boat we鈥檙e in this week.鈥� Glascock comes into the game sitting at 1-1 on the season, sporting formations that the Bulldogs most likely will not see much of the rest of the season. 鈥淕lascock, they鈥檙e a 鈥榃ing-T鈥� team. They run something different than other teams,鈥� Simpson said. Simpson believes the Panthers will be a tough football team to beat this Friday night. 鈥淭heir kids play hard and play every down. Every time you play Glascock, you know what you鈥檙e getting, but they never try to do what they鈥檙e not capable of doing,鈥� he said. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 really get an easy one against them.鈥� While GMC Prep came up short last week, Simpson admits the team played well and intends to implement a similar game plan against the Panthers. 鈥淚鈥檓 not real sure how much we鈥檒l do differently,鈥� he said. 鈥淲e did what we wanted to do, but we just made some mistakes while we did it.鈥� The Bulldogs hope to eliminate mistakes against Glascock in the second week of high school football, especially on special teams. 鈥淪ome things we learned, like to not field punts inside the 10-yard line, you can鈥檛 learn in practice,鈥� Simpson said. The first-year head coach also expects his non-starters to be more prepared this week to handle the workload that comes with playing at the varsity level. 鈥淭here are some things we learned as a coaching staff like work on our depth,鈥� Simpson said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e got seven seniors and four juniors, so we鈥檙e extremely young. The rest of the team is freshmen and sophomores that are having to play.鈥� Regardless of the team鈥檚 youth and depth, Simpson expects the Bulldogs to come out tomorrow night with their heads up and ready to play. 鈥淭heir spirit鈥檚 not broken,鈥� he said. 鈥淥ur kids are very positive.鈥� GMC Prep and Glascock go head-to-head Friday night at Davenport Field with the opening kick-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
